CPSL NEWS

3-15-05
On Saturday March 12 bragging rights were on the line as the Soccer "Prep Bowl" returned to the UIC Pavilion.  The Senior All-Star Teams from the CPSL and the Catholic League resumed battle after a fifteen year hiatus, and it was evident from the start that the competative spirt of the Soccer "Prep Bowl" has continued to grow in its absence.

Under the direction of Mandy Lankford the 2004 Farragut JV Girls' Soccer team took a trip to Florida to participate in the Walt Disney World Wide World of Sports Soccer Shoot-out.

While the trip was a huge accomplishment, it was not as difficult to arrange as one might think.  According to Coach Lankford "..the girls worked hard all season doing a ton of fundraising to pay for the tournament.  As a team we raised $14,000.00 to pay for everything assiciated with the trip, including tickets to all Disney World Parks, which of course is why we were there.  The only out of pocket expenses turned out to be $30.00 for a tournament pass ID and the cost of a few meals and souveniers.  Everyone had a great time and it was a fonderful and overwhelming experience for the girls, several of whom had never

even been on an aeroplane.  This year we are working toward attending a soccer tournament in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania."  If anyone has any questions about how to do something similar please don't hesitate to contact Coach Mandy Lankford at Farragut High School in Chicago.

Midway through the first period the game featured the first Blue Card (two minute penalty) in All-Star Game history.  The South Side capitolized scoring on the power play, and really dominated much of play from that point on.  At half time the South Side had established a 2 goal lead.  The North Side tried to put together a second half come back behind goals by Anthony Cecchini and Juan Lopez, but the South Side was just too tough.  They scored two goals of their own, and proved to be the more dangerous team all night long.

The Chicago Storm followed with a strong 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Steamers.  At half time of the Storm game all the members of both the Mens' and womens' senior All-Star Teams were recognized by the crowd as they walked onto the field to receive certificates of participation from Frank Klopas of the Chicago Storm.

It turned out to be a tremendous evening, and a big step for the CPSL and our student athletes.
